Welcome
to the homepage of the Ambassador Pipes and Drums. Our band/group enjoys the Scottish and Celtic culture, the Single Malt Whisky consumption/indulgence and the sounds of the Great Highland Bagpipe. We are conscious in tradition, ambitious/aspiring and adventurous.
The Great Highland Bagpipe has a particular tradition as an instrument at Scottish court. In the British "Disarming Act" after the battle at Culloden this Scottish tradition was mostly forbidden. This concerned the Highland dress (the “Hieland garb”), but not the Bagpipe itself. The bagpipe lived on as a military instrument and is often referred to as the Scottish national instrument.
The traditions are in most cases very old and still based on the Clan-System, after which the Scottish community was organised over many centuries. This system mainly played an important part in the Highlands. Hence nowadays so called Highland Games, which are based on the old-established clan gatherings, take place every year in over a hundred venues all over Scotland. In these games, participants compete in sports, such as the log-throwing. At the same time colourful fairs with a lot of folklore, traditional food and music are held. Especially the latter plays a prominent role and is mostly played by pipes.
The Ambassadors belong to Solothurn as well as the Solothurner-Kuchen (a local cake speciality) or the Solothurner-Wysüppli (creamy wine soup). We are Ambassadors of good music, who want to give people an understanding of the sound of the bagpipe, in respect to tradition and love for the instrument.
